In Australia we love the great outdoors.
So why not bring the love into our own backyard by installing an outdoor shower?
An outdoor shower makes a mundane ritual much more appealing by allowing us to enjoy fresh air, clear sky and possibly even a view.
It’s especially handy for rinsing off before or after a dip in the pool, a trip to the beach or a grubby day of gardening. And what a handy place to bathe your dog!
Choosing your outdoor shower location
The first thing you need to decide is whether your shower will be connected by pipes to your existing plumbing or whether you will simply connect it to your garden hose. Proximity to the water source will determine the location of your outdoor shower.
You will want it to be somewhere that gets some sun, not only because it makes the act of showering more pleasant, but because it’ll keep the shower walls and floor drier. Or if you want to shower au naturel, you may want to consider installing walls or privacy screens.
Choose a design for your outdoor shower
Depending on your budget, the choices are endless. From a simple shower head attached to a garden hose to a plumbed enclosure, the sky is literally the limit.
Your design can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. You can blend your shower into existing structures like boundary walls or courtyards, or build your shower into its own special place.

Most outdoor showers simply drain into the ground or through a bed of stone. Some, however, will require a drainage system to protect groundwater and water quality.
Before you install an outdoor shower, check with your local council to ensure the shower meets the regulations for your town or city.
